“Even Karl Marx, champion of workers, argued that ‘the artist must earn money in order to be able to live and to create, but he must by no means live and create for the purpose of making money.’ To my way of thinking, it is criminally ignorant to suggest that some people’s labor shouldn’t be viewed as labor. In promoting the idea that musicians should make “art for art’s sake” we condone a system that essentially eats its young. I think cultural economists know this. And the really sad thing is that the chronic poverty of artists has been transmuted into some kind of heroic vision of producing art for art’s sake. We simply shouldn’t view poverty as a noble choice.”

My feelings about Beyonce songs follow very distinct stages:

1.) Annoyance

2.) Loving it for how catchy and easy to sing along to it is

3.) Confusion. What is she talking about?

4.) Anger

“Party” is a seriously catchy song that I hated, then loved, only to be confused and annoyed by it now. Who is “We”? The lyrics make it sound like she’s taking on the character of teenage girl which is a little weird coming from a woman in her thirties but, okay, I can accept her being that character. But then I watch the video and in the video Beyonce is playing an adult that is totally dissonate with what the lyrics are describing. Ugh. I just want to make sense of all this.

Descriptions of musicians’ looks are just the tip of the iceberg here. Let’s play a game: Could you imagine the following phrase being written, never mind getting through an editor and being published in a major newspaper:

‘Without straying too far off the indie grid, he’s the perfect antidote to Bon Iver-Radiohead overload—dare we say, a skinnier Damian Abraham, a more stable Kurt Cobain?’

No, of course not. Because a) it’s just a jumble of names, b) just how big is this ‘grid,’ and c) mocking the ‘stability’ of someone dead after a life marked by turbulence is outright gross.
